On the 25th July 2011, 24 students studying landscape design at the University ofPretoria came to visit Nanhua Temple and our Zen Meditation Centre, with the purpose of using our Zen Centre garden as a practical project in their studies, and redesigning the garden so that the meditation practitioners will experience oneness with the whole environment, feel the Zen atmosphere, and calm their minds.
Ven Hui Fang on behalf of Nanhua Temple welcomed all students and their teacher, briefly introduced them to the history of Nanhua Temple, and told them about Fo Guang Shan and its founder, Ven Master Hsin Yung. Ven Hui Fang also proudly explained to all present that Nanhua Temple strives to be an example of Chinese Culture & Buddhist beliefs in South Africa through involvement in such items as empowerment of local communities through education, exchange of cultural activities, Dharma preaching, and poverty relief through various charity projects…
A Zen practitioner, Ms Lee Raath-Brownie, took the students for a tour around the Zen Centre, explained them the purpose of the Zen Centre, and answered student's questions about Zen and Zen garden design, in order to help them redesign the garden.
Than the students were divided into 6 groups, and each group was allocated a portion of the garden, which they measured up and studied to determine the best possible layout.
