The Nan Hua Youth Talent Camp of 2012 was nothing short of spectacular and exciting. The participants, about 50 young boys & girls of different nationalities and backgrounds, age 14 and above, set an energetic atmosphere right at their arrival to the temple, where they were received with a warm welcome and then divided into groups and allocated their rooms.
Shortly after arrival, old friends caught up with their news, and soon some new friends were made with the help of a simple ice-breaker fun game, followed by each group coming up with their own war-cry and a short performance to represent their group.
Thoughtful wise words were passed along from the Venerable Master Yung Shung to the eager participants about many aspects of the Buddhist values & way of life, the different kinds of Buddha… They were instructed on prayer, meal-time procedures & dining room etiquette.

In the second-day lessons , the participants were taught not only why to tolerate each other, but also how to communicate and work together as a team. They were also taught to be compassionate, considerate, self-disciplined and open-minded. They were exposed to the beauty of art & culture through the traditional artwork by Mr. Hsu, reminded of the fruits that usually follow hard work & discipline through Mrs. Chung beautiful traditional dancing lessons, and were reminded to show appreciation to those volunteers who took care of them by cooking & serving their meals, washing the dishes and cleaning-up the dining room.
Besides the important character-building lessons the participants received, an opportunity for having fun was never passed. A game throughout the whole evening was played by the participants; they were sent off to follow their clues to reach the final destination; and also a game of “rock, paper, and scissors” was introduced.
The third day was filled with hard work and commitment to perfect their dance routine especially with the camp coming to an end. There was another dance routine led by the Venerable to all the participants in a synchronized dance to the Happy Song, followed by a few words from the Nanhua Temple Abbot, Ven. Hui Fang
In the temple, various moral values were taught, for example the importance of being grateful, appreciative and thankful. Every participant took their time and offered a deep sincere prayer to their parents, relatives, friends, and to all those living and deceased beings who helped and supported them through their good and bad times.
As the final day dawned upon the tired, yet happy participants, the closing ceremony went through some elaborate preparation. When the time came upon us, the venerables delivered some more words of great wisdom and consideration to the participants. Soon thereafter, each group’s scores were announced, from the lowest to the highest , and each participant received a certificate and award. Last but not least, a breathtaking and spectacular dance was performed by the participants who beautifully showcased their skills, talents, and strong determination to learn.
The 2012 talent camp was a perfect place for fun and learning. Every participant created new atmosphere, memories, and vibe which revealed & enhanced their interactive personalities. They all found a new sense of belonging and will surely fondly remember this camp for many years to come.
